Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call involving 3 trucks. Four men were occupants in a truck that rear ended another one and pushed it off the road. Two occupants in the first truck were killed during the collision, they were thrown out of the vehicle and landed in the centre island as the truck went across the centre divide directly into on coming traffic.Motorists took evasive action as the truck continued for about 300 m on the wrong side of the freeway before coming to a stop.

The two other occupants were treated and stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance. The third truck came to a standstill in the centre of the north bound side with only slight damage.

Metro police took control of the scene as traffic was affected in both directions.

Fatal truck accident and accident at same location, Rivonia

Fatal truck accident and accident at same location, Rivonia
Report on a truck accident occurring on the N1 South Rivonia, 16h00. The truck involved was carrying approximately 20 tons of cement (in bags) when it crashed through the armco barrier and down the embankment taking a car with it in the process.

The driver of the truck suffered a severe, fatal head injury as the heavy load shifted forward and sheared the whole cab from the chassis. One passenger from the truck was injured and transported to hospital. A total of 8 vehicles were involved, only one was able to be driven away, the rest were all towed from the scene with a number of people having sustained less severe injuries who needed medical attention.

• Second incident, same location

By 23h00 last night the scene had not yet been cleared. Two heavy duty recovery rigs capable of lifting approximately 45 tons and 80 tons respectively were required on scene.(and were on scene.). The freeway had been totally closed between Rivonia and William Nicol to ensure a safe recovery.(Direction South)

During the recovery operation a car came down the freeway on the Southbound side but heading North.(on the wrong side of the road) It was reported that the driver got onto the freeway at William Nicol, on the wrong side and proceeded all the way to Rivonia, just over 4km, to where the first incident was still in progress.

The driver of the light motor vehicle then crashed into a tow truck which was still on scene at the first incident and was assisting with the road closure. The female driver of the car was seriously injured in the collision. She was treated on scene by Netcare 911 paramedics and transported to Netcare Sunninghill hospital.

She had sustained leg and arm fractures as well as injuries to her head and chest.
She is currently in ICU.(Photos of the car and truck taken in daylight at a different location to show impact damage). The scene was finally cleared at around 03h00 this morning.

Truck Accidents

Truck Accidents
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over 5,000 people lost their lives and over 90,000 were seriously injured due to large truck wrecks in 2003.

Although many people view truck wrecks as just much larger "auto accidents," they are in fact very different and much more complicated. Also remember, truck accidents due to trucking negligence are very costly to the trucking companies and their insurance companies. So the companies often try to settle everything quickly before the full extent of your injuries can be determined. Don't settle cheap! If you are hurt in an accident with a large truck, contact our attorneys today to learn about your legal rights.

Cause of Trucking Accidents
Some causes of truck accidents are:

  • defective equipment
  • reckless driving
  • driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • poorly packed loads
  • driving in unsafe road conditions
  • overworked drivers who are drowsy or fall asleep at the wheel

Tractor Trailer Accident Attorneys

Tractor Trailer Accident Attorneys
For several decades, BOSCO, WARD & CICCONI has represented those who have been seriously injured. Through experience and education, our firm is able to expertly evaluate medical injuries and pursue personal injury claims on behalf of the injured plaintiff. BOSCO, WARD & CICCONI provides sophisticated legal services for almost any type of injury.

Each year thousands of motorists and big rig drivers are killed and catastrophically injured by the negligent operation of trucks and tractor trailers by their drivers and by trucking companies. Typical accident scenarios are where a driver of tractor-trailer descends a steep grade without adequately checking his slack-adjusters on his air brakes. The result is that he becomes a runaway, and eventually ends his trip in tragedy at the bottom of the grade. Another example is where the driver of a large truck is unaware of the steep grade because the highway authority (CalTrans, etc.) has not adequately posted the roadway. The attorneys at BOSCO, WARD & NOPAR are experts in dealing with the mechanical aspects of large trucks and their braking systems. Another example of negligence occurs where the driver of a large truck ignores the road signage restricting axle number and/or weight of large trucks using a particular roadway.

Semi-truck drivers and the companies they work for have a duty to operate their vehicles in a safe and responsible manner. Unsafe driving, oversized loads and various other treacherous practices put the public and the truck operators in danger. Likewise, highway authorities have a duty to make the roadway safe to the users thereof. A typical roadway problem was presented by Kanan-Dume Road in Malibu, wherein it took 10 deaths before an arrestor bed was installed.

Large trucks - trucks weighing over 10,000 pounds - represent only 3% of all registered vehicles on the road in the U.S., yet they account for over 25% of the deaths in multiple vehicle traffic accidents and 98% of those killed or injured in trucking accidents will not be truck drivers.

Here are some alarming statistics:

  • EVERY 16 MINUTES OF EVERY DAY, another person in the United States will be injured or killed in a truck related accident.
  • Over four hundred and fifty thousand large trucks were involved in crashes last year.
  • Over one million people were involved in the crashes.
  • Over five thousand people were killed.
  • Over one hundred and forty thousand people were injured.
  • One third of the injured suffered catastrophic damage.

While mechanical failures, reckless driving and improper driver training account for some crashes, the overwhelming cause is driver fatigue. The National Highway Transportation Safety Association (NHTSA) reports that driver fatigue is responsible for 30% to 40% of all large truck crashes and is the probable cause in over 30% of crashes that resulted in the truck driver's death. In a recent survey, almost 20% of truckers admitted to falling asleep at the wheel at least once in the previous three month period.

All motorists should be aware of the dangers associated with sharing our roads with big rigs. Recent studies have concluded that automobile drivers must also accept responsibility for many of the tragedies resulting from car-truck accidents.

BOSCO, WARD & CICCONI believes that in order to represent our injured clients in the best possible manner, our firm must have an understanding of the human anatomy and how it responds to an injury. Therefore, through experience and education, our firm is able to expertly evaluate injuries and successfully pursue claims on behalf of the injured plaintiff.

While proving a physical, emotional, or cognitive injury can be difficult, our experienced and knowledgeable attorneys and staff are able to undertake difficult cases and prevail, convincing skeptics of the merits of a claim via credible, trustworthy evidence and objective test findings. Our firm is committed to protecting our client's rights and has repeatedly demonstrated our ability to succeed in the most challenging and complex injury cases.

Fatal truck accident on N12 after driver takes evasive action

Fatal truck accident on N12 after driver takes evasive action
A fatal truck accident occurred earlier today on the N12 and underneath the R24 bridge. One truck was involved and reports from the scene indicate the driver took evasive action as the driver of the car in front of him experienced a tyre blowout.

The driver was declared dead on scene once access could be gained with assistance from rescue personnel. No other injuries reported. Traffic was held up on both sides of the N12 for several kilometres.

Traveling towards Johannesburg was impossible for some time as all lanes were closed, then only one was reopened, as the recovery of the truck was not yet complete.

Driver Error in Fog Kills Two in 100 Car Pileup in California

Driver Error
Driver Error

18 Tractor Trailers were involved in a 100 car pileup in a California fog on November 4, 2007, and the tragedy is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require drivers to use "extreme caution" if they have poor visibility. This was an avoidable collision for the driver's, and the Innocent's hurt by their recklessness, if the trucktractor trailer drivers had only followed the law.

Specifically 49 C.F.R. § 392.14 states a driver must exercise "extreme caution" when hazardous conditions, such as those caused by snow, ice, sleet, fog, mist, rain, dust or smoke, adversely affect visibility or traction. Had the driver's exercised "extreme caution" there is no doubt in my mind that there would have not been 18 tractor trailers involved in this collision and the photographs I am pasting below would not have included a tractor trailer
